In depth knowledge and experience of Geographic Information Systems and data is essential and some knowledge of aerial survey is preferred.


Knowledge of spatial modelling techniques such as network modelling, surface modelling, and other complex spatial analysis is required. Also knowledge of spatial application development, relational databases and scripting; ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work. Advanced skills with GIS (ESRI & QGIS) in the context of geospatial data processing, analysis, management and presentation.

Reporting to the Operations Manager in the R&D department, you will be accountable for assisting in the growth of the GIS team and the R&D department, as well as supporting internal business; assisting the lead in developing external opportunities and managing GIS projects in the R&D department


You will also assist in the delivery of project-related tasks to meet budget, time-frame and quality targets, meeting or exceeding client expectations, promoting and marketing all facets of Bluesky’s services during interfaces with clients.



  • A minimum of 5 years of practical experience using GIS

  • Understanding of core principles of GIS and GI data management

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a geography related discipline, IT or computing, preferably an MSc in GIS

  • Extensive experience using ArcGIS Suite, in particular Model Builder and Spatial Analyst extensions and 3rd party plugins, also ESRI ArcGIS Online

  • Knowledge and Experience of Open Source GIS software (e.g. QGIS / GDAL / PostGIS)

  • Knowledge and Experience of WebGIS (e.g. GeoServer)

  • Extensive experience of geoprocessing and workflow automation

  • Experience of programming in either Python, SQL or VBA

  • Understanding of relational databases and database design

  • Experience of working with airborne remote sensing data (aerial photo & LiDAR in particular)

  • Knowledge using a wide range of geospatial data and analysis, including vector, raster and point cloud

  • Training and Mentoring others in GIS

  • Good communication and presentation skills

  • Self-motivated and organised individual

  • Excellent Microsoft Access and Excel

  • Previous GIS project management experience

  • Ability to identify innovative solutions to problems

  • Well-motivated and team focussed with an ability to work without supervision and act on own initiative

  • Well-motivated and able to work to tight deadlines

  • Desire to work within a small team applying GIS to environment, geoscience and infrastructure projects

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of working within environmental/geoscience (forestry/renewable/flood /environment/utilities) disciplines

  • ArcObjects, ArcGIS Server and ArcSDE,

  • PostgreSQL/PostGIS

  • Experience with FME

  • Achieved or working towards Professional accreditation e.g. (CGeog)

  • Metadata / INSPIRE implementation

  • Experience of preparing content for bids and proposals

  • Committed to Continuous Professional Development and an awareness of new GIS trends.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in GIS and/or suitable experience. 

Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing and delivering GIS projects for internal and external clients

  • Implementing R&D projects

  • Preparing and contributing to internal and external project bids and proposals

  • Providing GIS technical mentoring to other GIS staff

  • Undertaking presentations on GIS

  • Undertaking GIS mapping, analysis, data capture, data management and geoprocessing

  • Development and management of Web GIS projects including WMS/WFS services

  • Analysing and developing databases

  • Analysing data in Excel

  • Working with the GIS team to deliver GIS deliverables to tight deadlines

  • Undertaking quality control of GIS work undertaken by other GIS staff

  • Contributing to the technical development of the GIS team through sharing ideas and innovations

  • Occasional travel to client’s offices for project meetings

  • Performing other reasonable duties and responsibilities as required from time to time by your manager or Bluesky
