Land Use Analysis

One of the main applications of aerial photography is the analysis of land use, both in the past and in the present.

Bluesky are able to offer a service to analyse any aerial photos and provide an intelligent GIS map layer showing land use and land cover. The resulting database is compatible with NLUD 4.4.

As an associated product we are able to offer hedge row analysis, which uses a variety of datasets, including aerial photography and colour infrared photography to map out and categorise hedgerows.

The combination of our up-to-date modern data and our historical aerial photography archive provides a powerful tool in the analysis of land use change over the years, giving a detailed perspective on the history of change in an area.

Land Use Analysis

Land use analysis is an important factor in monitoring our habitat. In order to understand the environment first we must know what it is used for.

Land use refers to the human modification of the natural environment into the built environment such as fields, pastures and settlements and also of the longer term changes such as urban spread, soil erosion and degradation, salinisation and desertification.

Land use and management practices have a major impact on natural resources including water, soil, nutrients, plants and animals. Adequate analysis helps assists in the planning or prevention of these changes.

Historically, in the absence of land use analysis and management, land degradation has been exacerbated. This has had a considerable impact on the quality of the local population and delicate ecosystems.

With careful analysis, planning and management all aspects of land use planning can be monitored enabling continual development that complements the environment.
